Mahwah Library Closing Through Labor Day

Starting Saturday, residents can still check out books from neighboring libraries and online while re-carpeting shuts the library for over two weeks

The will be closed for a little over two weeks starting this Saturday, due to re-carpeting of the main floor. According to library staff, it will be closed from this Saturday, August 18, through the Labor Day holiday weekend. It will reopen Tuesday, September 4.

New carpet in all areas of the main floor – including the adult, teen and children's sections, staff workrooms and the Winter Room – will be installed while the library is closed, Director Kurt Hadeler said.

“We're all excited to have vibrant new carpet installed, especially in the Children's Room,” he said. “Carpet tiles will allow us to replace individual sections that become worn or soiled much more easily than the existing broadloom.”

The library “needs to be closed to the public because nearly every book, shelf, chair and desk on the main floor must be moved during the process,” Hadeler said. “We're working closely with the carpet installers and two moving companies to ensure that the project runs smoothly and that we'll be up and running right after Labor Day.”

During the two-week closure, residents will be able to access most of the library’s functions through neighbor BCCLS libraries, or online, Hadeler said. According to Hadeler, library users can follow these guidelines during the closure:

  • While we're closed, Mahwah residents with valid library cards can use any other Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) library, including our neighboring libraries in Ramsey, Franklin Lakes, Upper Saddle River and Wyckoff. Keep in mind that other libraries may have different rules about things like how long items may be borrowed and overdue fines.
  • The Ramsey Public Library has agreed to act as a temporary "home" library, issuing cards for Mahwah residents who don't have a card.
  • The biggest limitation while the Library is closed is that Mahwah residents won't be able to place holds or request books through intra-library loan. They will need to visit a library that owns the item they want in order to borrow it. Of course, they can always call ahead and most libraries will make sure a specific item is available and put it aside if someone calls. Placing holds and inter-library loan requests will be reactivated when we reopen on 9/4.
  • The Library's book return bin will be closed and locked while we're close, so people will need to return the items they borrowed to another BCCLS library, or wait until after 9/4 to return it here.
  • No items should be due while we're closed. However, if there are items that are due they can be renewed online through www.mahwahlibrary.org or returned to a neighboring library. People can check the status of their account, including what they have out and when materials are due, though our website. We will forgive fines for items that were inadvertently due while the library was closed.
  • For those who are participating in our "Reader Rewards" program this summer, we will offer double punches the first week in September.  So, each time they borrow items, their Reader Reward card will be punched twice, bringing them closer to winning cool library swag!
  • eBooks, digital audiobooks, downloadable music and our other online services will be available while the brick-and-mortar Library is closed. This is a great time to borrow an ebook from the library.
