Man Arrested After Allegedly Sexually Abusing Girl In Mahwah: Prosecutor

The girl Christopher M. Helbig, 32, allegedly abused was between 6 and 7 years old, authorities said.

A New York man was charged with sexual assault by contact after authorities were told he sexually assaulted a girl when she was just 6 and 7 years old, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

A caseworker with the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency notified the prosecutor’s office Special Victims Unit and the Mahwah Police Department that a teenage girl informed a therapist and the caseworker that she was abused by a male acquaintance when she was between 6 and 7 years old, Molinelli said.

The alleged abuse occurred in Mahwah, authorities said.

The Special Victims Unit and the Mahwah Police Department conducted an investigation into the allegations, Molinelli said.

Christopher M. Helbig, 32, was charged with two counts of sexual assault by contact and endangering the welfare of a child, Molinelli said.

Helbig was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. If released on bail, Helbig is to have no contact with the alleged victim.
