Mayor Laforet Says Election Results Have No Bearing On Him
The Laforet-supported slate of Susan Steinberg and Victoria Galow lost in the municipal election Tuesday.

MAHWAH, NJ — Mayor William Laforet is not concerned about how the results of the municipal election reflect on his job.
The Laforet-supported Make Mahwah Stronger slate of Victoria Galow and Susan Steinberg lost Tuesday to David May and George Ervin by hundreds of votes.
"I don't know if it has any meaning for me. They just didn't get the votes. I don't think this vote was applicable to me at all," Laforet said. "I don't see this as being reflective on my performance and it won't change our path as a township."

Laforet has been embroiled in controversy for months for backing and then distancing himself from an ordinance banning non-New Jersey residents from using township parks. The ordinance, and another regarding door-to-door solicitations, caused Attorney General Christophe Porrino to file a discrimination lawsuit against the township.
Vince Crandon, the leader of a community watchdog group has said he will launch a recall effort against Laforet — the second of his time as mayor. Crandon also released the results of a survey taken recently in which residents said Laforet is "dishonest" and "not trustworthy."

The Township Council cast a 6-0 vote of no confidence in Laforet in September — also the second time that's happened during his administration.
Laforet is not phased by any of it.
"I've got three years left. I do my job as mayor and I do it well," Laforet said. "I do what is best for the residents. I don't see this as being reflective on my performance."
Council President Robert Hermansen disagrees.
"I am glad the mayor believes he is doing a great job, the voters [Tuesday] did not think so," Hermansen said. "The things he is doing well are creating controversy and lying to the residents."
Laforet has not gone to the last few council meetings, he said, due to personal commitments. Residents have been especially critical of him and the job he's done during those meetings. He said he plans on attending future meetings.
