UPDATE: Motorized Wheelchair Stolen From 14-Year-Old With Cerebral Palsy Found, Man Arrested: Police

A Leonia police officer saw Michael Peralta, 18, Friday with the wheelchair, authorities said.

One of the men accused of stealing a $12,000 motorized wheelchair from a 14-year-old Leonia resident with cerebral palsy has been arrested in connection with the theft, police said.

Michael Peralta, 18, of Palisades Park, was being held in the Bergen County Jail Saturday morning, Leonia police said, and the wheelchair has been recovered.

Officer Sihoon Chung saw the wheelchair and Peralta while on patrol, police said.

Peralta is one of two men who reportedly stole the wheelchair from the resident's apartment complex on Broad Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday, police said.

The other male, also possibly in his late teens, is about 5 feet 6 or 5 feet 7 inches tall and Asian, police said. He was wearing a black and white striped shirt, black shorts, and black sandals. Police are still trying to find the person.

A video of the theft shows one of the men "joyriding away" from the scene with the wheelchair, police said.

Police released descriptions of the men Friday afternoon in an effort to find them and get the wheelchair back.

A GoFundMe campaign was created to help raise funds so his parents could purchase another wheelchair. More than 230 people donated $16,000, exceeding the original $15,000 goal, was donated as of early Saturday morning.

“We are sad that anyone would commit such a horrible and thoughtless act," Lisandra Delgado, the mother of the 14-year-old, told the Daily Voice, "but we have faith in the goodness to overcome all evil.”
