New Subcommittee Will Discuss Placing Cameras In Mahwah Parks

Formed at the July 8 Council meeting, a three-person subcommittee will discuss placing cameras in parks to combat littering and petty crime.

MAHWAH, NJ — After reports of littering in Mahwah parks arose again, Council member Robert Ferguson asked a simple question: "what can we do to get security cameras in our parks."

"There's cameras all over this country," he said. "In our schools, in every store you walk into, I think we need this in our town."

The question was posed during the "old business" section of the Council's July 9 meeting.

To do this, according to Council President David May, the issue would have to become a capital item. The scope of the project would need to be outlined, the idea would need administration research, and it would then be presented with next year's capital plan.

Janet Ariemma agreed with the idea that cameras should be considered, referencing cars broken into at Continental Park.

"If we had cameras there, I don't think this would be going on," she said.

May proposed the idea that the Council create a subcommittee for this issue, which was promptly formed at the meeting on an ad-hoc basis. It will consist of Ariemma, Ferguson and Michelle Crowe Paz.

No word was given on when the council would meet, and the committee did not have to be voted on given its ad-hoc basis.
