Valdo Panzera and his wife, who was his girlfriend at the time, were in the crowd as Stephen Paddock opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd from his hotel room at the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Fifty-eight people were killed in the shooting and 851 people were injured, including 400 by gunfire.

Paddock killed himself in the hotel room. Megan Panzera moved to Las Vegas from North Jersey to work as a teacher. They ran and sought shelter in a Motel 6 during the shooting. At least two others from New Jersey were in the crowd.

"My son is our hero because if it wasn't for him, who knows what would have happened," Panzera Jr. previously said. "When we were running for our lives, that is when it really hit me that I was a parent. It was all three of us running."
