No Cell Tower For You: Mahwah Cuts Ties With Wireless Edge

Wireless Edge and the township have parted ways, making room for a new round of proposals for the ever evasive cell tower project.

MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah's cell tower woes aren't over, but Wireless Edge will no longer be the company trying to solve the problem.

At a special meeting on Tuesday, the Township Council agreed to a mutual termination agreement with the company after a partnership plagued by frustrations.

Township Counsel Brian Campion explained that the company received a notice of default from the township "regarding non-performance" under the land lease agreement.

The company was given a 45-day "cure period" to fix the faults in the agreement, but submitted a proposal that Campion said was "not acceptable."

The proposal with Wireless Edge has been in discussion for about a year, but proposals for a cell tower a Fire Company 3 have been presented to the council over at least the last 15 years, according to Northjersey.com.

Cell tower proposals submitted to the town are aimed at fixing a 2-mile cell phone and emergency service dead zone, which have impacted residents on the northern border of the township for years.

A motion to pass the mutual termination agreement passed with unanimous approval.

"I just wanted to say to Wireless Edge, thanks for working with us and trying to figure out a solution," said Council President David May. "I think we all did the best that we could, but this is the direction we have to go in, and we look forward to the next step."

So what does that look like?

For starters, Chief Executive Officer of FSD Enterprises Declan O'Scanlon Jr. will oversee a new search for a carrier, and according to Business Administrator Quentin Wiest, he'll have a proposal and timetable ready in two weeks.

Wiest said O'Scanlon will be notified to begin contacting carriers soon, and he will report to the council every two weeks.

As it relates to when he'll be collecting bids, Wiest said it would likely be "a number of weeks."
