Report: Popular Local Farm May Be Replaced By Wegmans

A Bergen County farm popular with many Mahwah shoppers may be no more. According to an NJ.com report, the owners of DePiero’s Farm in Montvale are applying for a zoning change that would allow them to convert the location into a Wegmans grocery store and 100,000 square feet of other stores.

The DePiero family has teamed up with S. Hekemian, a real estate development firm in Paramus, to develop the property, the article said. The two reportedly appeared before the Montvale Mayor and Council Tuesday to present their development plan.

Representatives of the DePiero family told officials the farm’s “parking lots are empty,” and they feel that the retail developments would benefit the town, the report said.

Despite some protestations from locals, the Montvale mayor and council voted to introduce an ordinance that would rezone the farm to allow for the 250,000 square foot development, the report said.

According to the report, there will be a public hearing on the ordinance before it goes up for a final vote on April 30, and the developer would need Planning Board approval before construction could begin.
