Ramapo College Student Sexually Assaulted In Dorm, Police Say

19-year-old girl told authorities she was reportedly assaulted by another student, police said.

A 19-year-old Ramapo College student told police she was sexually assaulted by a male student in a dorm room early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The girl told Mahwah police officers at 1:15 a.m. that she was sexually assaulted by another Ramapo student in an Overlook dorm room a brief time earlier, said Chief James Batelli.

The girl was transported to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood where she spoke to a Mahwah police detective and a member of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes Unit, Batelli said.

The girl decided not to press charges, Batelli said.

The alleged assault comes months after the college implemented new restrictions on drinking alcohol on campus in response to an alleged sexual assault on campus last November. Five students were accused in the alleged attack on an intoxicated freshman. Three were charged with aggravated sexual assault.

The new policy doubles fines to $400 for students needing emergency medical treatment due to intoxication. Students who host parties where excessive drinking occurs or where minors are served alcohol will be evicted from campus housing for a semester and fined $500, college officials announced in January.

The college announced in a new report in August called “Ramapo: Advance,” outlining changes that have been made and plan to implement, including banning hard liquor on campus and hiring more security personnel.

Adopting a formal student sexual misconduct policy was also a recommendation listed in the report.

The college is also working with the Mahwah Police Department to further reduce the risk of sexual assaults on campus.
