Say Thank You To Neighbors Who Helped You During The Storm

Neighbors come together as residents deal with power outages days after weekend snow

Mahwah is still recovering from last weekend's storm. Did someone help you and your family out during and after the freak fall storm? Did you crash on a neighbor's couch, or get a warm meal from a freind? Did someone invite you over to catch a favorite TV show or take care of your pets when you had no power?

Patch wants to help you thank the people that helped out when the October 29 snowstorm knocked out power to thousands of residents in Mahwah.

For Lois and Albert Weiss, a couple in their 80s who live on Pendleton Road in Mahwah, neighbor Jim O'Connor was the one who made sure they were OK.

"He's been in and out of here, making sure that we get taken care of," Lois, who still did not have power back Wednesday evening, said. "He's a good neighbor."

O'Connor, whose nearby home also had no power Wednesday, said everyone in Mahwah should do the same. "Check on your neighbors, especially the older ones, make sure they are ok and they have what they need. There are some parts of this town that got hit really hard by this thing, and we need to take care of each other," he said.

O'Connor said he was in touch with all three candidates running for mayor to seek support for the Weiss household. John DaPuzzo asked police to bring flashlights to the household, Lisa DiGiulio passed by to give them emergency contact information, and Bill Laforet dropped off firewood and warm meals, he said.

"The lights from the police are helpful because my husband is legally blind, and they help him see," Lois said. "And really, we needed the firewood, we are just staying by the fire. Yesterday it was 41 degrees in the house, and today 44," she said Wednesday.

Lois, who said she's been living in her Fardale home for 22 years, said she's never been out of power this long. "During Hurricane Floyd, it was a few days but nothing like this."

The combination of help, meals and caring from her nieces and nephews in the area, and her mindful neighbor has helped the Weiss's since the storm.
