Solving Consumer Issues: NJ Motor Vehicle Commission
Have a consumer issue? Help is on the way!
I sat down today to take care of some paperwork and came across the bills for the registration of my car. I mentioned to my friend that I thought registration was high and she said that she had paid less. I was surprised to hear that the rates were different because the cars are similar, near in both age and weight. After looking up the schedule of fees, I saw that my car was listed as a "class 8" and was really a "class 7", a difference of $25/year. I have been paying this higher rate since I purchased the car, in 2008.
I immediately called the NJMVC and they agreed that I had been billed wrong. They corrected it for this year and said they could only refund my money for the previous two years. As always, it is my responsibility to find the mistake! They are sending me a form that I need to return with a copy of my old and new registrations.
Unfortunately, since I did not notice this sooner, I will lose $50 to the state. While I normally check all of my bills, it didn't occur to me to double check this one. I have certainly learned my lesson and will be scrutinizing every bill that comes my way.
