Fake $100 Bills Pop Up Again at Manalapan Wegmans

An international counterfeiting ring flooded the New York City metropolitan market with millions in fake $100 bills back in 2014.

Manalapan, NJ - Bogus $100 bills have resurfaced yet again in Manalapan.

A Sayreville man was arrested Saturday after he tried to pay for several gift cards at the Manalapan Wegmans using fake $100 bills, police said. Bill Hamill, 59, was arrested inside the Wegman's Saturday.

Last month, on Feb. 4, in a similar incident, a man paid with $100 bills at the Manalapan Wegmans. He was not caught in that instance and left the store.

He bought $12.99 worth of merchandise with a $100 bill and received $87.01 in cash back. A day later store employees realized their error and called Manalapan police. The $100 bill was identified as a bleached $5.00 bill. When holding the bill up to the light, a hologram of Abraham Lincoln’s face could be seen, as well as a barcode with the word “five.”

Many attempts of fake $100s have been reported throughout Monmouth County, including at the Shop-Rite in Aberdeen, and at the Holmdel A&P. In 2014, it was reported that an international counterfeiting ring flooded the New York City metropolitan market with millions in fake $100 bills.
