Man Hits Manalapan Boy, is Charged, Police Say

The driver, a 76-year-old Monroe Township resident, did stop his car and talk to the boy, police said.

Manalapan, NJ - An elderly Monroe Township man struck a Manalapan boy last Friday, Dec. 2, and has now been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, said Capt. Thomas Barstow of the Manalapan PD.

The incident happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2; the 12-year-old boy was struck by the car as he was crossing Church Lane, very close to where he lived. The boy sustained minor injuries. The driver, a 76-year-old Monroe Township resident, did stop his car and talk to the boy, police said.

"It was just an unfortunate series of events. He stopped and asked him if he was OK, the boy said he was OK and he left," said Barstow. "Needless to say, he was required to stay at the scene. The boy went home and his parents later called the police."

Several witnesses saw what happened, and were able to provide vehicle information — a dark-colored sedan — and a license plate to the Manalapan police. Stanley Perlman of Monroe Twp. was located and was issued two motor vehicle summonses, one for leaving the scene of an accident and another for failure to report an accident.

After the boy's parents called the police, he was treated for minor injuries by Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid, but his parents declined to have him taken to a hospital.
