Manalapan High On Monmouth County List Of Hate Crimes

MANALAPAN, NJ — As New Jersey — and the nation — is still reeling from what increasingly appears to be a hate crime in Jersey City this week, the FBI released new data Friday, Dec. 13 that shows 172 towns in New Jersey reported hate crimes in 2018.

According to the FBI, the towns with highest number of reported hate crimes in Monmouth County were Keansburg, Monmouth Beach, Deal, Aberdeen — and Manalapan.

A hate crime is defined, legally, as a crime fueled by hate toward race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender and gender identity.

The specific crimes that occurred in each town were not listed by the FBI.

This past Tuesday in Jersey City, a man and a woman appeared to target an Orthodox Jewish supermarket as the place from which they based their shooting spree, which killed a police officer, three innocent bystanders and ultimately the two shooters themselves. The shooters identified themselves as members of the Black Hebrew Israelites, who claim they are the only true descendants of Israel.

The man, David Anderson, 47, also left behind a handwritten note that said, "I do this because my creator makes me do this and I hate who he hates," according to nj.com and The New York Post.

On Friday, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said on Twitter "it'll become increasingly clear that the target was the 50 children at the Yeshiva attached to that store," he said. "We will never know 100 percent but the doorway to the Yeshiva was 3 feet away."

The FBI found that the reported number of hate crimes in the United States decreased slightly from 7,175 incidents in 2017 to 7,120 in 2018.

This data is based on hate crimes reported to the FBI in 2018, and starts with the highest number of reported incidents.
