Manalapan Township Trash Contract Stinks

For roughly $30 a year in increased taxes we all could have had the same garbage pick-up schedule that we had all along; two garbage collection days a week and one recycling pick-up per week.***

$8,339,000 - 3-year total cost of the proposal offered to the Township Committee, which would have continued collections as it has been for years - and that they rejected.
$7,226,000 - 3-year total cost of the proposal accepted by the Township Committee for the new collection schedule.
$1,114.000 - Difference between having our garbage removed as it has been for years and the new removal schedule over the 3-year period of the contract.
$371,333 - Difference of the above number $1,114,000, dividend annually over the 3 year time span of the contract.
14,281 - Number of households in Manalapan
12,200 appx - Number of households affected by the change in garbage pick-up. (Communities that have shared dumpsters were not affected by the new contract.)
$30.44 appx - Yearly average cost per household to have the trash collected as it had been prior to the Township Committee signing the new contract.

If you are paying for a second weekly pick up, the following numbers may be even more disturbing:

• Approximately 820 households are now paying an additional $300 per year to have 2 trash pick-ups a week.
• Each of these households is paying 10 times more for their trash removal than their tax increase would have been - without the same level of service.
• Taken together, the 820 households (around 6% of the 14,281 total) are spending $246,000 per year in extra garbage collection costs. That’s 66% of the $371,000 that the entire town could have split (at $30 per household).
• The cartage company is making $246,000 on top of what the Township pays them.
