This is not the first tree-related injury in Manalapan Township this season: In April, a maintenance worker with the New Jersey State Park system sustained serious head injuries when a heavy branch from a tree fell on top of him while he was cutting it down. That accident happened in Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan Township on April 5.

The worker was removing trees to prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect that kills ash trees. He was airlifted to an area hospital where his last known condition was critical. He was wearing a helmet, face shield, gloves and safety chaps when the accident occurred, a state parks spokesman said.
