BELMAR – There is a lot of confusion about the new recycling parameters for Belmar residents.

So officials sought to resolve issues people may be having with it:

  • The Belmar Borough Ordinance reads that the recycling container must not exceed 32 gallons as well as a 50-pound weight limit. Residents are allowed a maximum of five containers per household.
  • In addition, areas in the borough where garbage and recycling fall on the same day can cause confusion for both Delisa Waste Services and the Belmar Department of Public Works.
  • Therefore, it would be extremely helpful if the recycling containers are blue in color to decipher between garbage and recyclables. However, a blue container is not mandated by the Borough Ordinance.
  • The borough also pays for recycling per ton. Therefore, if a container does not have a lid and it gets wet, it would weigh more and would cost more to recycle. It also may not be picked up due to the 50-pound weight restriction.
  • The ordinance for the weight and size of the container is approximately 30 years old. It was drafted to protect workers from injury.
  • If you have further questions, please contact the Belmar Department of Public Works at 732-681-0452.
