Belmar Beaches Will Be Free On Labor Day
Proceeds will go to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

New Jersey is no stranger to tragedy created by storms. Five years after Superstorm Sandy devastated the Jersey Shore, one town decided to give back.
Belmar will not ask for beach fees this on Labor Day. In other words, the beaches are free. Instead, the borough would like you to donate to help victims of the destructive floods caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana.
"Belmar will provide free beach access on Labor Day and ask for donations for Rockport, Texas," Mayor Matt Doherty said Friday. "I will deliver funds to their mayor next weekend."

Boxes will be set up for people to redirect the money they would have paid for Belmar beaches toward the flood victims.
Doherty said he was making move after getting encouragement from relatives in Corpus Christi, Texas. Belmar beach fees are typically $8 per adult.

The donation boxes, according to nj.com, will be at the beach entrances with the badge checkers on Monday. The town likely would have collected as much as $40,000 that day.
