Belmar Man Charged In Brielle Pedestrian's Car-Crash Death: MCPO

The driver was released pending trial, according to prosecutors.

An unidentified man died as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle on Tuesday morning in Brielle, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said.

The male victim was walking in the area of Route 71 and Bradley Avenue in Brielle at approximately 12:37 a.m. Tuesday morning, when he was struck in the northbound lane by a 2018 Nissan Versa driven by Dr. James S. McCaughan, 57, of Belmar, according to the MCPO.

The victim was pronounced dead at 12:56 am.

McCaughan was charged with third-degree causing death while driving with a revoked or suspended license, as well as two additional motor vehicle tickets. He was released pending trial.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Brielle Police Department.
