Belmar Mayor Closes Jersey Shore Town to Visitors

Mayor Matthew Doherty closed Route 35 into town for four hours due to overcrowding from the Belmar Seafood Festival.

The Borough of Belmar is used to crowds. But not like Sunday.

Mayor Matthew Doherty ended up tweeting on social media that Belmar was closed to all but residents because of a capacity crowd in town to attend the annual Belmar Seafood Festival, according to Philly.com.

All Route 35 traffic into town was barred for four hours, starting at 3 p.m. except to residents.

The weather was hot and thousands jammed the borough for the Seafood Festival.

The mayor told NJ.com that a “perfect storm of good things” led to the visitor surge.
