Blaze Destroys Two 110-Year-Old Homes In Belmar Overnight: Videos, Photos

Breaking: People living in both homes escaped the fire without injuries, Belmar's mayor said.

BELMAR, NJ — A massive blaze destroyed a pair of 110-year-old homes on 10th Avenue in Belmar overnight, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said Wednesday morning.

Doherty tweeted a photo of the burned out structures and said no one was injured in the fire, which was reported about 12:45 a.m.

NJ.com reported that a married couple and their adult son heard the smoke detectors in the home go off and were able to flee, and the home next door was occupied by a couple.

The fire resulted in mutual aid requests to a number of surrounding towns, with firefighters from Wall Township, Ocean Township and elsewhere.

"Good work to everyone who responded to the early morning blaze," a post on the Union Fire Company of Belmar Facebook page said Wednesday morning, citing Belmar Volunteer Hook & Ladder Fire Company and Goodwill Hose Company Station 87-3 of Belmar in its post.

Irene Paitakes, who lives across the street from where the fire happened, captured the scene on video and shared two videos to Facebook, showing flames shooting high into the sky. Residents posting on the mayor's Facebook page, said the flames could be seen in the sky two streets away from the site of the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene as of 7 a.m. The fire remains under investigation, but Doherty told NJ.com the cause did not appear to be suspicious.
