After emigrating from her native Ireland to escape the Great Famine of 1845, personal tragedies changed the trajectory of her life in America.
Jones turned heartbreak into activism, dedicating herself to workers’ rights and becoming a prominent labor organizer – the proverbial ‘Mother’ of America’s labor movement. Her words are still invoked by union supporters today: “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.”
