Rain, thunderstorms on tap for today

Not a good beach day, unless you like downpours.

The National Weather Service is calling for cloudy skies with showers and thunderstorms and highs in the mid-70s. Beach winds will from the south at five miles per hour.

Waves will be around three feet today, with southeast swells of two to three feet. The ocean water temperature is 72 degrees. There's a moderate risk of rip currents, which means wind and save conditions can support stronger or more frequent rip currents.

If you can find a guarded beach, bring a flotation device in the water with you. Discuss any possible surf zone hazards with the guards.

The lightning threat is high today, which means thunderstorms are likely or expected. The UV index is a 4, which the NWS considers moderate.

High tide at Belmar occured at 9:42 a.m. Low tide will roll in at 4:04 p.m., followed by another high tide at 10:10 p.m.
