Preservationists wanted to repair the span, which is currently closed. But the decision was announced as part of he county’s recommended plans for the Three Bridges Project, which also encompasses the Fisk Avenue and Green Avenue bridges.

The public will have until March 19 to submit comments at www.monmouthcountythreebridges.com.

“We get resident support from the two municipalities and then we’re going to bring that back to the [Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders] for their resolution supporting the project as well,” said Joseph M. Ettore, county engineer told The Coast Star.

Mayor Ed Donovan told the publication: “I think we need a safe bridge that everyone can get over safely — cars, pedestrians and bicyclists — and you don’t have to worry about substandard lane widths and shoulders widths.”

The bridge has been closed for several months. During scheduled routine maintenance of the Bridge, additional necessary repair work was discovered and county officials have aaid they are not able to reopen the bridge today as previously scheduled.

Vehicles and pedestrians should plan to use an alternate route during this time. Detour signs are posted.

“Monmouth County prides itself on safety, especially with its movable bridges,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the County’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. “We apologize for any inconvenience to the traveling public and thank everyone for their patience while this work is completed.”
