Doctor With Suspended License Charged In Brielle Car-Crash Death

UPDATE: A doctor with a suspended license was charged Tuesday in the car-crash death of a NJ man, according to prosecutors.

A doctor with a suspended driver's license was charged Tuesday in the car-crash death of a New Jersey man, according to prosecutors.

James S. McCaughan, 57, of Belmar, a surgeon at Community Medical Center in Toms River, struck an unidentified man with his car in Brielle, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said. He also has an office in Brick.

The male victim was walking in the area of Route 71 and Bradley Avenue in Brielle at approximately 12:37 a.m. Tuesday morning when he was struck in the northbound lane by a 2018 Nissan Versa driven by McCaughan, according to the MCPO.

The victim was pronounced dead at 12:56 am.

A resident heard the crash and called police, and McCaughan also called 911, Brielle police told nj.com. Blood samples were taken from the driver.

McCaughan was charged with third-degree causing death while driving with a revoked or suspended license, as well as two additional motor vehicle tickets. He was released pending trial.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Brielle Police Department.
