On April 1st at the InfoAge Science History Learning Center and Museum, Camp Evans, Wall NJ a Morro Castle display will be officially opened for public view. This display shows items recovered from that ill-fated liner which burned and came ashore at Asbury Park in 1934. 137 people died in the disaster.
Photographs of the Morro Castle on the beach at Asbury Park make up some of the most iconic images of New Jersey. The disaster has often been described as a “comedy of errors.” Cowardice, ignorance, corruption, gambling, sabotage, arson and murder have always been associated with the Morro Castle and create a storyline right out of a Hollywood plot. This disaster, as well as the wreck of the 1854 New Era and the 1912 sinking of RMS Titanic, will be the topics of presentations at an upcoming gala fundraiser for the shipwreck museum on April 14, 2012 in the MAC at Monmouth University.
The Morro Castle display in the shipwreck museum will be open from 1PM to 5PM on Sunday April 1st. Also on display will be maritime items that will be available at an auction off on April 12th just prior to the gala. The auction will also be held at the university.
