Broadway series opens Oct. 12 at Manasquan theater

Algonquin Arts Theatre has announced its lineup for the 2012-2013 season.

The first installment in their Broadway Series will be Gypsy, which opens Oct. 12.

According to a release from the theatre, Gypsy is about "the overbearing Mama Rose, the quintessential nightmare stage mother, pushes Gypsy (Louise) and her sister June into life on the vaudeville circuit, forever trying to break into the big time."

MANASQUAN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2012) – After receiving acclaim from audiences and critics alike last season, Algonquin Arts Theatre is pleased to announce the return of both the Broadway Series and Orchestra Series as the theatre’s 2012-13 season gets underway this fall.

The season opens on Oct. 12, 2012, as “Gypsy” kicks off the Broadway Series with six performances across two weekends produced by Shore Repertory Theatre Company. Shore Rep follows in December with its production of “Scrooge! The Musical,” which played in Ocean County venues for 10 of the last 11 years.

The music of the legendary Patsy Cline will shine in the third musical of the season, “Always Patsy Cline.” Emmy-Award winner Sally Struthers and Broadway’s Carter Calvert star in this Algonquin Arts Theatre production for two weekends starting Jan. 25. A pair of exciting Best Musical Tony-Award winners round out the season in the spring. Those titles will be announced in early 2013.

Father Alphonse Stephenson and The Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea return for another season featuring three concerts. The series opens with “Cole Porter & Friends” on Sunday, Nov. 4 and continues with “Viennese New Year” on Sunday, Jan. 6 and closing with “Greatest Hits of the 1800s” on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Tickets to all 2012-13 Season performances are on sale now online at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or stopping by the Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. on weekdays and 12-4 on Saturdays. A $2 processing fee is applied to each ticket that is $13 or more.

Subscription packages are the most cost-effective way to attend the Broadway and Orchestra Series performances – offering savings of up to 28 percent – and can be purchased by calling the Box Office or at algonquinarts.org/subscriptions. Group rates for 10 or more also offer significant discounts.

In addition to the two marquee series,’ the 2012-13 season is chocked full of some old traditions and some new programming including great concerts, films and special events.

The Nutcracker returns to the Algonquin in December, with American Repertory Ballet’s massive cast and thrilling choreography. Before 2012 gets away, Simply Diamond, a fantastic Neil Diamond tribute act, rocks New Year’s Eve. The McLean Avenue Band and the Emerald Fire Irish Dancers will delight on March 2 in the traditional Irish show.

A pair of special events straight out of New York City also comes to the shore this season. First on Nov. 10, Faye Lane’s Beauty Shop Stories is an award-winning one-woman show featuring stories and songs. On March 24, 2013, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players bring The Mikado to the Algonquin stage.

This season’s Film Series includes an interactive screening of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” (Oct. 27), the return of “World’s Best Short Films” with a whole new lineup (Nov. 3), Reel History (starting Oct. 23) and the second annual Kidz Filmz festival (Feb. 8-10, 2013).
