Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty announced this week that a police officer will soon be placed at Belmar Elementary School
Doherty, making the announcement at the Borough Council's Tuesday meeting, said the move was a "pretty extreme step" but necessary after the mass fatal shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 dead, according to tapinto.net.
Doherty said having a police officer at Belmar Elementary School will serve as a deterrent and act to protect students, teachers and administrators, according to the report.

Borough Administrator Colleen Connolly said the police officer is going to be placed at the school "sooner rather than later," according to The Coast Star.
Connolly said the police department currently participates in lockdown drills at the school, performs periodic walk-throughs and has a significant presence at the building all day long.
