"Oscar Shorts Day" Coming to Asbury Park on February 6

Audiences can enjoy every Academy Award-nominated short film for 2016 at The ShowRoom Cinema; Oscar Shorts Day is Feb. 6

The ShowRoom Cinema of Asbury Park (www.theshowroomap.com) is thrilled to announce it is launching a new program called “Oscar Shorts at The ShowRoom.” Moviegoers have the unique opportunity to screen every short film that has been nominated for an Academy Award in 2016. These short films will run during a four-week period (January 29 to February 25, 2016) at The ShowRoom Cinema.

Located at 707 Cookman Avenue in the heart of the “Art Bloc,” The ShowRoom Cinema is Asbury Park’s art house cinema. Since its founding by Nancy Sabino and Mike Sodano in 2009, The ShowRoom Cinema has screened the finest independent, documentary, and international films and hosted eclectic live events.

According to Sodano, short films have been part of The ShowRoom experience from the theatre’s outset. However, 2016 marks the first time that The ShowRoom will host an Oscar Shorts Day that screens all three genres of short film: animated, live-action, and documentary.

“Beginning on January 29,” Sodano explains, “ShowRoom guests can enjoy this year’s Oscar-nominated short films in the animated and live-action categories. Then, during our first Oscar Shorts Day on February 6, The ShowRoom will add the Oscar-nominated documentary short films and run all the shorts in a continuous loop.

“All three genres will be showcased in our daylong event at The ShowRoom on February 6,” Sodano continues. “It’s a marvelous opportunity for moviegoers to experience each of this year’s Oscar-nominated shorts, in all three disciplines.”

Oscar Shorts Day on Saturday, February 6 will feature exclusive promotions, raffles, refreshments, and live entertainment at The ShowRoom in addition to the short films that will run back-to-back. Guests will have the opportunity to vote for the short films that they predict will win an Oscar. They also can be the first to participate in the “Name Theatre 3” contest at The ShowRoom.

When The ShowRoom Cinema opened in April 2009, it marked the first time in 30 years that a movie house had appeared on the streets of Asbury Park. But about 90 years prior, Asbury Park had seven palatial movie theatres, including the multipurpose St. James Theatre that Walter Reade had established on Cookman Avenue. Today, along Cookman Avenue, The ShowRoom continues to present relevant and provocative movies and events that engage diverse audiences. As a versatile entertainment space, The ShowRoom is positioning itself as New Jersey’s headquarters for Oscar Shorts.

“The caliber of this year’s shorts films is tremendous,” Sodano emphasizes. “At The ShowRoom, we can capitalize on the magic of short film and introduce new friends to our unique arts space in downtown Asbury Park.”
