Paving Scam In Manasquan, Belmar Area

MANASQUAN – Local police would like to make residents aware of a paving scam targeting senior citizens that has resurfaced in the Manasquan and Belmar area.

The scam typically starts when a paving company offers to seal coat or patch your asphalt driveway for a reasonable price, police.

This small job is typically completed. However, it is then followed by numerous return visits for additional payments or to perform additional work which is either unnecessary or not completed, police said.

The people will then seek additional payments for those other jobs.

This type of scam typically targets seniors who live by themselves. In 2018, local police charged numerous individuals involved in this type of fraud.

Please be aware that this type of work requires registration through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs before they can perform home improvement work.

The Contractors Registration Act (56:8-136) exists to protect consumers and establishes a mandatory registration program for contractors who are in the business of selling or making home improvements in New Jersey.

Residents should be asking for proper documentation and completing a contract for work before agreeing to allow work to be performed.
