THE FEAR OF SHAKING YOUR TAIL FEATHER

Peacocks have no fear of shaking it. People do.

So, after some certain instances this past weekend,  I focus this blog on the question, “Why are we so afraid of sharing our successes with others?

And the follow-up to this question is the next question. The question of “Why is it so easy for us to share our perceived faults and weakness with others? ” And WHY oh sweet why are we so comfortable putting ourselves down to others? I am certainly guilty. And by witnessing others conversations this weekend specifically, I know most of us are guilty. You reading this right now, yes, you are guilty.

We are so hesitant for whatever the reason may be too, well, yes, toot our own horn, shake our tail feather…and possibly share some..a teeny tiny bit of our fabulousness with the world?  Yes, being humble is an amazing trait, and staying humble is probably one of the hardest things to do in today’s society, but there is something more here. This is more than just being humble.

We are afraid of something. and something holds us back from being proud? So we need to ask ourselves “How do we deal with fears of success?” And when I say success, stop thinking that means making tons of money or getting some amazing job promotion; it can mean anything that you are proud of accomplishing, from sticking to your diet, walking a 5 k race, quitting smoking, to holding your head stand in your yoga class for 5 full breaths and perhaps accomplishments of forgiveness and acts of compassion we have shown towards others.

Subconsciously though, I believe we are 100% clear that these are successes..c’mon now. Inside our minds and bodies, we are giddy, and proud, and full of elation and positivity, BUT we would NEVER show it on the outside, nevermind speak about it. Or if we do, it’s simply a mention of it…followed by a total downplay of whatever it is we are sharing.

Some fears of success are easy to release because they will probably never happen, such as fears of losing it all and becoming homeless. But some are real.

When you change, the relationships around you will be forced to change. Some friends will always cheer you on. But others are steeped in jealousy and will denigrate you for moving forward. I guess this is a big reason why we do what we do, right?

I say we need to stop holding on to being powerless. Ask yourself, what do you get out of pretending to be powerless? What do you get to avoid? What emotion do you avoid? Are you seeking self-pity? What is it? Maybe you are afraid that by telling others about your success, whatever it may be, then you are obligated to sustain it…and what if your mind tells you, you probably can’t? What if I gain the weight back I told them I lost? What if I get laid off this year after I successfully bought a new home and had that amazing housewarming party where I was proud, and maybe showing off a little?

Listen. There are no guarantees, so be proud of what you have today. We are all players in a game called life.  Stop living in the past, and stop thinking so much about the future. You have such amazing gifts and the world is missing out on hearing about.

You are a beautiful thread in this fabric called life. It’s OK to be a bright star…and perhaps your light, your brightness, will inspire others, to be proud, to set goals, to share accomplishments…and to shake their tail feather.

Namaste,

Andrea
