Will The Main Street Bridge In Belmar Shut Down?

The borough was told that the bridge will not shut down while it's being repaired and rebuilt. Then it was told otherwise.

Will the Main Street bridge that connects Avon and Belmar be shut down?

That's what the state Department of Transportation told the Borough Council this past month – after originally telling the town that the span won't be shut while it's rebuilt.

Mayor Brian Magovern said he wasn't pleased with the decision, saying he was initially told the bridge is going to be rebuilt within 4 years and the span "will never be closed entirely."

Then he was told the bridge will need to close down after September for two months to replace guardrails.

"I can't understand why the DOT will be spending money" on something that will be replaced anyway, he said.

Magovern said he spoke to Avon and "I believe they're as outraged as we are."
