1 Hurt In Route 70 New Year's Eve Crash In Manchester: Police

Police say a 17-year-old tried to pass multiple cars and lost control when oncoming traffic forced him back into his lane.

MANCHESTER, NJ — A 17-year-old driver who was trying to pass multiple vehicles on Route 70 lost control of his vehicle and caused a three-vehicle collision that shut down the road for several hours on New Year's Eve, Manchester police said.

Only one person was injured in the crash, Manchester Capt. Todd Malland said. A 17-year-old female from Pemberton suffered a broken hand after her car was hit, he said.

Malland said the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

A 17-year-old male from New Lisbon was westbound on Route 70 in a 2001 Kia Sportage and tried to pass multiple vehicles, but seeing oncoming traffic, he tried to abruptly move back into his lane, Malland said. In doing so, the boy lost control of the Kia, crossed the center line and careened into the eastbound traffic, hitting a 2005 Infiniti Q56 SUV and then hitting the front and driver's side of a 2006 Mazda 616, Malland said.

The driver of the Infiniti, David Demsey, 36, of Atco, and his passenger were not injured, Malland said. The driver of the Mazda, the 17-year-old female, was taken to Lourdes Hospital in Browns Mills for treatment of the broken hand, he said.

The 17-year-old male was not injured, Malland said.

The crash closed Route 70 from Route 539 in Manchester to Route 530 in Pemberton, he said.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport, officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department, and members of the New Jersey Department of Transportation. This accident remains under investigation by Patrolman Marc Micciulla of the department’s Patrol Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to contact Micciulla at 732-657-6111, ext. 6384.
