MANCHESTER, NJ — Three people were injured Sunday in a three-car crash on Route 70 that happened when one car crossed the center line and hit the other two, causing one to flip, Manchester police said Monday.

Samuel J. Anderson, 57, of Toms River, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. Drugs were found in Anderson's possession, Manchester Lt. Vincent Manco said, and he is suspected of driving under the influence. He was not wearing his seat belt.

Christopher J. Monroe, 46, of Manchester, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment, Manco said. Monroe's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and he was wearing a seat belt, he said.

Cydney K. Savage, 60, of Camden, who was a passenger in a car driven by Judith F. Barnett, 69, of Camden, was taken to Deborah Heart and Lung Center for treatment and evaluation. Both women were wearing their seat belts, he said.

Manco said the crash happened about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Route 70 about milemarker 37 in the Whiting section. Officers determined Anderson was driving east in a white 2006 Volvo S40 when he crossed over the center lane and hit the black 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Monroe head-on. The PT Cruiser went off the road and turned on its side.

Anderson's Volvo then hit Barnett's silver 2013 Hyundai Genesis in the driver side, heavily damaging the car and causing it to spin off the road, Manco said. There were no injuries reported for Barnett.

The investigation is continuing, but driver impairment appears to be the primary cause of the crash, Manco said.

Patrolman Jesse Hoydis and Patrolman Michael Anderson are investigating. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit, the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, and Manchester First Aid Squad all assisted, Manco said.
