E-Scooter Rider 'Critical' After Crash With SUV In Manchester, Police Say

MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester woman was severely injured Monday when the e-scooter she was riding crashed into an SUV on Route 37, Manchester police said.

Sabrina Hauge, 26, was listed in critical but stable condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune on Monday evening, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

Hauge was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which happened about 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of Route 37 and Buckingham Drive, Vega said.

Hauge was riding the e-scooter on the shoulder of westbound Route 37, and Anner Galvan-Vasquez, 24, of Toms River, was driving a white 2017 Chevrolet Suburban west on Route 37 at the same time, Vega said.

Hauge reached the intersection with Buckingham Drive first and then tried to cross Route 37. As she did so, the e-scooter hit the passenger side of the Suburban as it continued west through the intersection, he said. The left side of the e-scooter’s handlebar impacted the front passenger-side fender of the Suburban, and then Hauge and the scooter hit the passenger-side rearview mirror along with both passenger doors, he said.

Galvan-Vazquez stopped about 500 feet west of the crash, Vega said. He was not injured.

Hauge was thrown from the scooter and landed on the pavement in the left westbound lane of Route 37, Vega said.

There is a traffic signal at Buckingham Drive.

Vega said the preliminary investigation indicates disregarding a traffic signal and improper crossing of an intersection appear to be the primary contributing factors.

Patrolman Michael O’Hara of the department’s Traffic Safety Section is investigating.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, EMTs from South Toms River First Aid, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation Diversion Team.
