MANCHESTER, NJ — A New Brunswick man escaped injury Tuesday when his car caught fire as he was driving in Manchester, police said.

Irving Delacruzchino, 28, was driving south on Route 539 shortly before 6:40 a.m. when the engine in his black 2006 Toyota Camry failed, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

After the car came to a stop, Delacruzchino saw smoke coming from the front of it and got out immediately. He was the only person in the car, Vega said.

As officers arrived the car was fully engulfed in flames, Vega said, and police closed Route 539 in both directions while the Whiting Volunteer Fire Company responded and put out the fire.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious and was likely caused by an electrical issue, Vega said.

"The Manchester Township Police Department would like to thank the Whiting Volunteer Fire Company for their rapid response and professionalism in successfully containing and extinguishing the fire," Vega wrote.
