Ask the Optician Your optical questions answered by Joel C. Wolf , Licensed Optician and Owner of Village Opticians

Repair or Replace? That is the Question

My right lens keeps “popping out”. I can make it go back in but it never stays for long. Can you fix this correctly or do I have to buy a new eyeglass frame?
I can fix this correctly and permanently. Most often, this is a simple repair that can be done while you wait.

I have a single small scratch on my lens. Can this lens be saved?
A lot of times I can “buff out” a small scratch. The type of lens you have will determine how much I can do to repair a scratched lens. Your best bet is to stop by and show me and I can go over your options with you.

I sat on my glasses and the frame is cracked. Do I have to buy new eyeglasses?
The short answer is “no”. You do not need to buy everything new. You can choose to simply replace the frame. I can help you select a frame that will work with your existing lenses, take proper measurements and insert your “old” lenses into your new frames all in the same afternoon.

The “arm” has come off my glasses and I can’t find the screw. Can you fix this?
Yes. This is another quick, easy fix. A screw that is constantly coming loose can also be fixed with a quick visit to the office. If you have lost the temple (or “arm”), I may be able to replace just the temple, saving you the cost of a new frame.

I’ve just noticed that one of my nose pads are gone, are they replaceable?
Yes they are, just stop by.

My metal eyeglasses are all discolored and dirty, is it time for a new pair?
If your eyeglasses are in good shape and just need a good sprucing up, then by all means, they should be saved! I can clean them with an ultrasonic cleaning machine that will get them just as clean as they can possibly get. I can tell you when I see them just how clean I believe I can get them and if I think it’s your best option.

My glasses are a mess and so uncomfortable! They keep slipping down my nose and the arms are all floppy! Is there any hope for them or should I just buy a new pair?
Even the best fitting highest quality glasses can loosen and misalign after extended wear or poor care. If your prescription is correct and you like the way your glasses look than it makes sense to keep them. What you describe sounds like issues that can be resolved with some simple adjustments by a skilled, licensed Optician.

As always I hope I have enlightened a few of you and helped to keep you comfortable, healthy and safe.
