Well to start off, after doing some research, I have come to find out that the proper term for a food blog is a "flog."
So here it goes... Coming from Italy as a teenager to Elizabeth, NJ, little did I know that in two short years my younger brother and I would be in business — the pizza business! Starting out in a little storefront pizzeria on Union Avenue in Lakehurst (now occupied by a restaurant with Asian cuisine), we toiled away day and night to get the building and the business going.
Just our luck a liquor license became available from the Bob's Lakehurst Inn which was located west on Union Avenue, now the site of a municipal parking lot across from Borough Hall. Our building was so small that even though we had a full liquor license we couldn't fit a bar, so we just served beer and wine!

Things were very different back then (early '70s); the streets of Lakehurst were a little rough, between the "locals" and the sailors from Lakehurst Naval Base, after 11:00 p.m. On many a night, I witnessed plenty of bloodbaths spilling out onto the streets from the local bars in the neighborhood.
After everyone got all of the fighting out of the way, they would make their way into the pizzeria, where we would whip up their favorite pies or subs. To be continued...
