MANCHESTER, NJ — An 89-year-old woman was seriously injured in a crash on Route 530 at Schoolhouse Road on Friday night, Manchester Township police said.

Gloria Smith of Whiting was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

Smith was driving a tan 2011 Nissan Altima east on Route 530 about 5:30 p.m. on Friday when she tried to turn left onto Schoolhouse Road but turned into the path of a gray 2007 Ford Mustang driven by Amanet Canto, 18, of Cream Ridge, who was driving west on Route 530, Vega said.

Vega said Patrolmen Jesse Hoydis and Brendan Brush are investigating but the failure to yield to right of way at the intersection appears to be the primary contributing factor in the crash.

The Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Manchester Township Emergency Medical Services, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, Life Flight Medevac, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and Priced Rite Towing responded.
