Free Narcan Kits For Heroin Overdoses Available Tonight

Kits to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose will be distributed at the United Methodist Church on Lacey Road

For families dealing with heroin addiction, the risk of having to cope with an overdose is high.

Minutes can make all the difference in the world in those situations, and to give families hope, free Narcan kits -- which deliver naloxone, an antidote for a heroin/opiod overdose -- are being distributed tonight in Lacey at the United Methodist Church from 6 to 9 p.m.

This will be the last kit distribution for a while, officials said.

The Narcan distribution event includes education on how to identify the signs and symptoms of an overdose, how to administer the naloxone, as well as a voucher for 30 days of free substance abuse treatment for any person who needs medication-assisted treatment.

The event is offered in a confidential setting, officials said.

The Opioid Overdose Prevention Project is made possible by funding from the state Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services and JSAS HealthCare, in collaboration with Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ocean County Health Department and the Ocean County Opiate Task Force are supporters, according to a news release.
