Hogan 5K Set For Third Year In Manchester

The event raises money for a scholarship for a Manchester high school senior and for a local Scout troop.

MANCHESTER, NJ -- The third annual John Hogan Memorial 5K race will be held Saturday, Sept. 24.

The event honors the memory of Hogan, a military veteran, a corrections officer, a Scout leader and a coach, who died in October 2012.

The race, through the Roosevelt City section of Whiting, raises funds for a scholarship for a Manchester Township High school student interested in attending college towards a career in law enforcement as well as funds for Whiting Boy Scout Troop 350.

Race organizers said there will be awards to the top three male and top three female finishers, age group awards, and awards for top boy and girl Scout finishers and top law enforcement finishers.

The 2015 scholarship recipient was Danya Stewart, who is attending Elizabethtown College, and the 2016 scholarship recipient was Stephanie Medina, who is attending Fairleigh Dickinson University.

"John Hogan was a husband to Renee, a father to Jack and Jared, a brother and uncle, a military veteran, a corrections officer, a scout leader, a coach, and a friend and neighbor to all," the race website says. "He was a generous person who gave of himself to others always. He was taken from us in October of 2012, and we will forever honor his memory by celebrating his life."
