Residents to notice increased aircraft activity, says Naval Air Station

The Naval Operations center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst reported on Tuesday that residents who live in the vicinity of the base may notice increased presence in the local airspace due to a large training mission at the base.

The “Elephant Walk” dates back to World War II, as the Army Air Corps’ bomber fleet would regularly stage attacks with more than 1,000 aircraft in tow. Observers of the bombing runs noted that the nose-to-tail formation of planes resembled a pack of elephants looking for their watering hole – and the name has endured all these years.
