Joint Base MDL Training Rumbling Ocean County This Weekend

The base issued a notice that the howitzers would be getting a workout.

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ — That booming noise you're hearing Friday morning? The howitzers are getting a workout.

Officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst posted a notice Thursday that training is scheduled for this weekend, through Saturday, Dec. 1, and with the cloudy skies, the noise tends to travel farther.

The notification didn't say what hours the training will occur.

The website Military.com says the M198 howitzer used by the U.S. Army fires four rounds per minute and has a maximum range of 11 to 18 miles, depending on the type of projectile it's firing. The howitzer has a relatively short barrel and fires projectiles over relatively high trajectories, with a steep angle of descent, according to Wikipedia.
