NJ Military Base Alert Cleared After Suspicious Packages Deemed No Threat

JOINT BASE McGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ — Officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst issued a high-level alert on Tuesday afternoon after suspicious packages were found on the base, officials said.

The alert was lifted about 4:30 p.m. after the packages were deemed to be no threat, base officials said.

In messages posted to the base's official social media, base officials said the base is "currently at FPCON CHARLIE," a security level activated "when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely," according to the U.S. Army.

The threat initially prompted an order for all non-essential personnel to leave the base, the messages said.

"Security Forces and our first responders immediately responded, secured the area, and determined the packages posed no threat," base officials said in an update after the initial alert was issued. "We are grateful for the quick and professional actions of our first responders whose vigilance helps keep our community safe every day."

A request for additional information was not immediately answered by Joint Base officials.
