Lakehurst Changes Delay to School Closure

The increasing snow and slippery driving conditions led to the decision; Manchester schools opened on time.

LAKEHURST, NJ -- Students and staff of Lakehurst Elementary School are getting a long weekend, after officials changed a delayed opening to a closure.

The snowfall that began around 5 a.m. has increased in intensity in several areas and with temperatures hovering around freezing, has turned streets and sidewalks into a slippery mess.

Lakehurst originally had set a two-hour delay. Manchester Township schools opened on a normal schedule.

Speed limits have been lowered to 45 the entire length of the Garden State Parkway and there have been a number of fender-benders already, as well as reports of a few serious crashes.

The snow is expected to stop between noon and 1 p.m., before schools let out for the day.
