Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the only tri-service installation of the Defense Department. It spans 42,000 acres in Ocean and Burlington counties. Its host wing is the U.S. Air Force 87th Air Base Wing, and according to the base's website supports 88 mission partners.
The base is home to the historic Hangar 1, which was built to house the Hindenburg when the airship came to Lakehurst.
The base also houses U.S. Army and U.S. Navy operations.
The initial lockdown alert telling base personnel to take cover did mentioned Building 5231, but it was unclear whether that building is housing for base personnel or if it relates to the mission activities of the base.
