Man Flips Pickup On Route 70, Charged With DWI: Lakehurst Police

The man was found walking along Route 70, away from the scene of the crash.

LAKEHURST, NJ — A Lacey Township man was charged with driving while intoxicated after a Route 70 crash that left a pickup truck on its roof last week, police said.

Peter C. Wilkins, 46, of the Forked River section of Lacey, was arrested early Wednesday morning following the crash that happened shortly after midnight, Lakehurst Police Officer Robert Schroeck said.

Wilkins was found walking along Route 70, away from the scene of the crash near the Eisenhower circle, where a white GMC pickup truck was on its roof, leaking gasoline. Sheppert R. Erbe, a passenger in the pickup, was standing on the grass median of the circle when Schroeck and Officer Harry Paul arrived.

The investigation revealed that Wilkins had been driving and was under the influence of alcohol, Schroeck said. Wilkins also is accused of providing officers with false information as to who was operating the vehicle.

Wilkins was arresteed and charged with hindering his own apprehension and issued seven motor vehicle summonses for driving while under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, suspended driver’s kicense and failure to exhibit insurance. He was released pending a mandatory court appearance with the Lakehurst Municipal Court.
