Man Was High During Hit-And-Run Crash: Lakehurst Police

The man is accused of leaving the scene of Route 70 crash and having heroin and suboxone in his car when he was found shortly later.

LAKEHURST, NJ — A Lakewood man has been charged with driving under the influence and multiple drug offenses after leaving the scene of a Route 70 crash, Lakehurst police said Friday.

Steven A. Mitryk, 54, of Lakewood, was arrested Tuesday evening after officers found his 2005 Honda Accord with damage consistent with reports from the accident that happened at Routes 70 and 547, Lakehurst Police Officer Robert Schroeck said.

Lakehurst Officer Daniel Hourigan responded to the 4:49 p.m. call reporting the crash, and when he arrived was told there were three vehicles involved but that one had left the scene, Schroeck said.

Officers began searching for the Honda and when it was located a short time later, Mitryk was driving. Hourigan was able to determine Mitryk was showing signs of being under the influence of drugs and saw a suboxone strip in view. A search turned up multiple wax folds of suspected heroin, multiple strips of suspected suboxone, a hypodermic syringe and other drug paraphernalia, Schroeck said.

Mitryk was charged with possession of heroin, possession of suboxone, possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of cds and driving while intoxicated and issued a warrant for the charges. He also was issued nine motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, suspended driver’s license, unlicensed driver and failure to maintain lane.

Mitryk also had a Brick Township Municipal Court warrant for his arrest of $500, and he was arrested and taken to Lakehurst police headquarters and then to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, where he remained Friday.

Hourigan was assisted by Sgt. Matthew Kline and Officer Jason Guide, Schroeck said.
