Manchester Gospel Chorus Marks 50 Years Of Honoring MLK Jr.

The annual event, timed to the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stresses positive messages of faith, hope and goodness of mankind.

MANCHESTER, NJ — When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was gunned down in a motel room in Memphis, Tennesee in April 1968, millions mourned the civil rights leader's death. Memorial events were created around the country, including in Manchester.

This month, the Manchester Township School District will be marking the 50th anniversary of its tributes to King and the history of the Manchester Township High School and Middle School Gospel Chorus.

The gospel chorus concert is set for Friday, Jan. 18. It became an annual event long before King's birthday became a recognized national holiday. It was and remains a time for those keeping his message and his words alive to celebrate.

The celebration — and make no mistake, the event is a celebration that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired — will include the recognition of King and his significant contributions to the civil rights movement. It also will be "an exhibition of the perseverance, citizenship, and outstanding talent of both past and present participants" in the gospel chorus, the district said in a news release.

The celebration annually includes not only the beautiful voices of the chorus but also includes inspirational speakers who can touch and move the most curmudgeonly of hearts with uplifting messages of hope, faith and kindness. Last year's speaker was gospel recording artist Minister Nancey Jackson Johnson, who urged those in attendance to see and honor the good and the positive within themselves.

This year's event will include a proclamation from Manchester Mayor Ken Palmer; a presentation to Queen Cannon, the founder of the Gospel Chorus; and words from a surprise guest and community leader who walked with Dr. King, the district said.

The event is held at Manchester Township High School, 101 Colonial Dr., and is open to all. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m.
