The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program is a federally funded program that focuses on citizenship development. It has been in commission at Manchester Township High School since 2000.
The NJROTC program says its mission is to instill in students "the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment," according to its website.
In addition to citizenship and leadership development, NJROTC cadets learn about the country's maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. There are community service activities, drill competition, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training, according to the NJROTC website.
Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.
